Why are the older diesels slow and gutless? Can anything be done about it?

Ostryjak

Can you share more about your propane fumigation system..

I may want to do something to 'perk up' my feeble 240D..

I'm also considering adding a pyrometer, so it doesn't go thermonuclear..

So---

I guess your saying my aspirations are normal-- but doomed to be dismal.. :P

Okay-- are there any good threads about turbocharging the 240D motor.. BTW-- what "model" engine is that.. I hear different engines reffered to by manufacturer numbers, but I'm still too much a 'nO0b' to know what's what..

I know my 81 240D is a 123 body..
and the 85 300SD is a 126, with I think a 617 engine???

It seems many pull both plastic tubes off of the switchover valve and connect them together, thereby by-passing the switchover. The plastic tube then essentially runs directly from the banjo nut to the ALDA. Man, you'll see a world of difference!
You were NOT kidding. I bypassed by switchover and now between 2200-3000 rpms I have a scary badass increase in power. Did a 6 hour road trip to portland and back and it runs pretty damn nice. Doesn't knock or ping or give me any indication that its truly stressing the engine, but does sorta surge the power so I hafta back off a little bit when accellerating now, but hills dont stop me. But the fact is my 87 300d turbo can do 0-60 in about 5.5-6 sec now.

Is anyone truly aware how much this stresses the engine, or if it wears out other components faster? I as least know I can set it back with a screwdriver in the dark in 3 minutes if needed.

You are correct, but Im sure you hear that alot.

Its much more like 10-12 secs. But in my excitement I guesstamated low. But it amazes me how much turbo boost i get now, but after talking to the shop I may set it back the way the factory has it. Dont wanna hurt this pretty car with crazy amounts of boost.
