It seems that the rear active suspension system on my 1984 300 TD wagon has been disconnected. Thisis most likely because there was a leak in one of the components. I priced the new rear shocks and found new shocks cost about 400.00 each. Has anyone had any experience with this system who could help me come up with a less expensive alternative? I thought a set of air shocks might be employed instead of the stock shocks.Without some dampening the handling is less precise than I'd like.

I don't think anything other than what was designed will work in that application. I have had to fix mine before and they don't fix cheap but the ride and handling is well worth it I think

My self leveling rear suspension was also disconnected.Watch out for the advertised replacements for non-self leveling-they don't fit.
I have removed a pair of Monroe 31125 shocks that are flat. I'm working on finding a heavier duty set. Monroe has a web site; go to catalog and misc info. Here's what I have so far: you can use up to an S6 mount on both ends, less than 2.25" diameter and 12 to 18.5 min travel. I'm still working on finding load ratings.
Let me know if you find something-when you don't have the vehicle application or model, most people just stare at you from behind the counter.

 

Today's update-
After buying the Bilstein non self-leveling rear shocks that didn't fit (wrong mounting) and a pair of Monroe shocks that were the right mounting but way too large, I found a pair that fit well and drive good. Monroe Gas Magnum #34792 (sold at NAPA as #76792). Done!
