Very hard to start

Hello,

ANY help is useful for the problem i am about to explain. Thank you in advance. Here it goes:

When i plug my car in the car starts with ASOLUTLEY no problem. Does not smoke or stutter whatsover.

IF i don't plug it in, LOOK OUT!! It takes a long time to start and once it does start you would have thought i blew the car up from all the smoke.

Any suggestions??? 300SDL Turbo.

Thank you and have a great day.

What year?
Do you own control light?
Check if the glow plugs get the juice.

Yeah. Circuit tester like this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=4288
I believe 86 models have each glow plug supplied by separate cable, what makes it very easy job to test them.
Disconnect the cables from the plug and having the tester connected to positive side of battery touch each one of them.
Those with no current indicate burned plug.
Than connect the tester to negative side and put it on the plug. When engine is cold and ignition turned on, it suppose to light up for at least few seconds.

The OM603 engine you have, either 86 or 87, will be very very hard to start with one or two GP's not working and almost impossible to start with three burned out without the aid of the block heater. It will also smoke much more than normal for the first few minutes, assuming you got it running. If you end up having to remove the intake manifold in order to access the hardest ones to get to, I'd replace all the glow plugs.
