Slow Transmission Leak
Hello to all, I have two 1979 MB's one is a 300SD and the other is a 450SL, both have the same problem, they always leave some transmission fluid on the garage floor.
The 300SD has been in the family since it was purchased new in 1979 and the 450SL I got about 10 years ago, they both have about 125,000 miles on them. The 300SD has left small amounts of trans fluid under it for the life of the car, and the 450SL does it too. They both will do it till the dipstick reads 1/4 qt low then stop. I have asked the dealer about it and they said it was a problem with that model year, when the car is sitting the torque converter overfills the trans and some fliud comes out. So, is this true, is there any fix to stop it, or do I just drive them around a 1/4 qt low? Any and all feedback is welcome... |
Slow Transmission Leak
So I guess this is typical and there really is no real fix for it?

Thanks for the info, now I will have to invest in a good "oil catch mat" to keep under her.

Just run it slightly below where it stops leaking, You aren't going to damage anything 'till you start getting below the add mark on the dipstick. The fact that you know where it stops leaking indicates that you check it regularly, so simply let it run a little low and watch it.

Thanks for the info, that is pretty much what I have been doing, too bad there is no "fix" out there for it, I guess I will just have to live with it..
