should i buy this 1984, 240D ?

Hello,

I'm going to look at a 1983, 240D stickshift here in Paris this week, its on ebay for 2500euros (3500 USD) 220000 kilometers on it (136000 miles) they say it's in perfect condition and has been serviced by the book by Mercedes. Is this a good price ?

I've never owned a Merc but love them and decided to buy one for many reasons, is this car a good choice for a first timer ?

advise greatly appreciated, thanks,
rob

sorry i posted this already in the Sticky about diesels but realized later it should be a new thread ..

the good one that got away

Well i just lost the 84, 240d, it was sold to the person who seen it before me, gutted... should have acted faster.

Now i'm thinking about this one on ebay:

Mercedes 190D 2.5L 94hp Diesel BVA (don't know what BVA is) en très bon état général, roule très bien (very good condition), 185.000kms(114.000 miles) 2500E (3500USD)

Please give me some advise ..

thanks,
rob

Diesel engines typically have a long life when maintained. The other questions about the car only you can answer, as you are the one looking at it, we only have your description.

I have owned six diesel cars, four Mercedes. I would not recommend the 240D as your first diesel unless you have driven it and are comfortable with the very low power. Make sure to test drive it, especially with the air conditioner turned on.

I owned one, it was really really slow. And I am not new to diesels.
Now I have a 1986 300SDL, which I love.

This would also depend on the type of traffic you drive in...if you can safely merge into traffic at a lower speed in your area this may be a good car for you...I am in Wichita KS and no real issue with that here...now if I were back in Germany trying to merge onto the Autobahn then that would be a different story...nice running car once up to speed but no rapid acceleration with this car....I love my 77 240D
