You have set yourself up to get 30 or more OPINIONS! Use dextron/mercon in the trans. brake pads from Mercedes unless you want to hear them when applied. Oil weight based on your climate and formulated for a diesel engine. Air filter MANN. Starting in winter, clean fuel filters & proper battery. Our winters get all the way down to 50 Degrees! so at times we wear jackets, so we just keep our cars in the garage at night.

nothing wrong with more suggestions or opinions.
i started to reply on sunday night and the power went out.
mobile one is probably the best oil. for winter they make a 0w-40 that would be great. too expensive? castrol 15w-40 chevron delo 15w-40 work well even in the winter. just make sure that the oil you buy has a CF rating. SF is spark-fired ignition and CF is compression fired ignition. diesels are compression fired in case you did not know. valvoline makes good quality products and i use their max-life transmission fluid. their brake synthetic brake fluid is also excellent and can be mixed with conventional fluid. use dot-3. prestone and peak are what i use for the engine coolant. and i buy distilled water to mix with it. some don't but i am manic about my benz. they sell premix coolant and it costs very very slightly less than full strength. so i mix my own. i use mann oil and air filters and fuel filters purolator or febi brand. for shocs bilstein, koni, or kyb. i agree with carnut that brake pads need to be of really good quality and mercedes pads are quiet and reliable.
all the above is my opinion and is offered as a guide for you.
to run all winter you will need a block heater. mine came with one from the factory as it was built for the northern usa. if you dont have one it would be of great benefit to have one installed. the other thing thats a must is a diesel anti gel. when diesel oil gets cold it turns to a gel and won,t flow. some guys use kerosene. i use howes diesel fuel additive or diesel kleen anti gel injector cleaner. it has worked well the last two winters. if you want more info e-mail me at andyfairna@yahoo.com
hope this helps!

Hi

Thx for that great info 81 300 CD. But yet i have a question. Yesterday i was reading my owners manual and it says that the brake system requires Dot 4 Brake fluid? I use Dot 3 all the time. Will this ruin my brake system.

Please reply

o.k. first thing i want to caution you about is the use of a synthetic oil. it is able to weep past the seals and can cause leaks that wont dissappear if you try to go back to conventional oil. for your 79 i would stick with conventional oil. 15W-40 with a block heater will be fine and is used by many it the north east. i would take my car to work where i cannot plug the heater in, but with good glowplugs and a strong battery, starting was not a isssue. i would light the glowplugs twice and turn the coldstart **** up and she would fire right up.
dot 4 fluid has a higher boiling point and should be used if recommended. mine calls for dot 3 but maybe higher brake temps are expected in your vehicle or as a safety measure they use a higher boiling point fluid.
as for the engine restore, i dont really think it will help. conventional gas engines run 10 to 1 compression ratios. by comparison the diesels we hav are 21 to 1. i dont believe it will help but if you do use it, and it really corrects the problem let us know. i must say i used this product on a neglected toyota silly-ca and it did check oil consumption quite a bit. the car would use 1.5 to 2 qts between changes and it really stopped using it to about half a qt between changes.
hope this helps.
