Power Steering Fluid, special or not?
The 85 300sd I will be getting is doing some "groaning" around the driver's side wheel when turning and sometimes straight. I noticed the power steering was fluid was a little low. Does it use some special euro formula or is it just normal power steering fluid? I would appreciatie any help.

I don't mean to be a pest, but I really need to know the answer to this. I am going to be looking at this tonight. Thanks

RE: Power Steering Fluid, special or not?
OK, two people need answers..........First, realize that there is a filter within the power steering pump.....should replace......second, DO NOT put automatic transmission fluid back in as replacement..(older MB's are sensitive) (plays with seals) use only -power steering fluid- as bought in auto parts stores, or go to the dealer!
Change your brake fluid too.............every other year......ya! |
RE: Power Steering Fluid, special or not?
Oh well, I put ATF fluid in as described in the owner's manual and Hayne's manual. I did not see a filter in the resoivor. Where is it?

if you remove the fluid in the pump reservoir by any means available to you the filter is at the bottom. usually held by a press nut or a regular threaded nut.

If you are concerned about PS fluids, you might try VW PS fluid. Their's is a special mineral formula that they claim MUST be used in VWs (you cannot use common PS fluid in them).
