Om617 Compression test results

Hi I am going to be putting an Om617 (5 cyl turbo Diesel) in my toyota pickup, I pulled the engine from a 1980 300SD with 170,000 miles on it.

So i did a compression test and I wanted to see what you mercedes guys thought of the numbers:

#1-270psi :(#2-320psi
#3-340psi
#4-305psi
#5-340psi

Now before I start replacing gaskets and stuff on this engine to get it ready for the swap i wanted to see what you guys think, I could sell it and get another engine or I could run it as is.

The engine ran great with alot of power although it smoked at idle and had a rough idle, once going it moved really quickly (even tho all four calipers were siezed lmao)!!!

Those numbers, especially #3, are not good. I would not use this engine.

However, you could do a few things and then run your compression test again. Adjust the valves, remove the injectors and plug the holes and then see what your numbers are. If you didn't do these things before your first compression test, your results could be lower than the actual capability of the engine.

Sorry I mis typed that, its 340PSI and to clear up how i did the test,It was not warmed to operating temp (its out of the car) and each time I checked a cylinder i replaced the previous injector.

According to the specs it is within spec even though it was about 30 degrees when I did the test. But that number one cylinder is the only one that has me worried.

I also am looking at taking a diesel engine from a Mercedes and put it into a truck.

I own a beat up old 240D with the 4-cylinder diesel and want to put it into a '95 Chevy S10.

How is your project going so far?

I am having a hard time finding anyone else who has done a similar project, so all advice is appreciated!!!!

Last summer's project was building an electric car. Once I get my truck running on Bio-Diesel, I will have fossil-fuel-free transportation all around!!!

Thanks,

Ben Nelson
