Had 220d 1971 for a year now, no problems until now. Lots of oil being sucked into intake manifold and driping onto ground. Happened suddenly with a shudder and massive white smoke cloud out tale pipe. Not sure where the problem is. Any insights into problem would be welcome.

cause:
cap on first camshaft bearing improperly machined on inside resulting in excessive oil leakage.
engine oil is sucked into the combustion chambers through the crancase ventillation.

remedy:
remove cylinder head cover.
disconnect preshaped hose between pressure valve (crankcase ventilation) and oil separation chamber (cylinder head cover) and check at increased engine idle speed (up to 3000rpm) whether oil separator fills up with oil.

if the oil separator is filled up with oil, do tell me for i will give the next step.

 

I don't know how the 220D's oil seperator is made, but on my 300SD, the top cover of the oil seperator was loose, squirting oil out. I simply resecured the top cover (by pressing the tabs that hold the cover to the canister back down) and my oil leak slowed way down.

 

You may have excessive blow-by.

After the car has sat for at least 12 Hrs on level ground, check your oil level, and make sure that it's not more than half way up on your dipstick. If it is, remove some of it until its no more than half way up.

Also, try changing to heavier grade oil, i.e.: Fully Synthetic, Mobil 1, 15W50, or equivalent
