Hello All:

New to the discussions and to MB. A friend of mine is selling his dad's car, a 1992 MB 300SD with slightly over 100,000 miles on it. He says it's in decent shape, but has not run for the past year or so. I would like to know if there are any known problems with the model year, and what does a car like that go for. I would really appreciate all your comments, and I hope that I buy it so that I can benefit from the knowledge in this forum.

Don't walk, run........run as fast as you can........away!!

If this is the one, 91-92 300/350 SD, this car I believe, (I'll check) is know as "The Rod Bender" A bored out 603, that failed miserably! Mercedes has made only successful diesel engines, until this one that is! I have read a bit about them, enough to stay away! Ask the owner if it's on it second, or third engine? If it's the original, duck and take shelter, it's ready to explode!

UPDATE
I checked and the 92 300 SD is powered by the 2.5 five cylinder engine and are a "bullet proof" engine, meaning that it is one of the best and will live a very long time with proper care. Didn't mean to scare you!

Don't know the current value, but you could check on the web for NADA used car prices to give you some clue....I would guess between $7K and $10K ...............BB

I think that your engine is in fact a 6 Cyl, 3.5 Litre engine, If so, than it is one of the engines that does bend its rods. So, check your engine size, if it is the original engine and it is a 6 Cyl, 3.5L, STAY AWAY FROM IT.

I guess the last poster didn't read the warnings!

My update was based on questionable info. Seems that it may very well be powered with that 350 engine and if so, stay away from it, better yet, stand away from it, if it's running!
