Need help on installing starter on '84 300SD
 

I had problems starting my 1984 300 SD the last week or so. Tracked the problem down to the starter solenoid. It looks easy enough to access the bolts, etc., to remove the starter on this model, but once I have it unbolted, there doesn't look to be enough clearance to "snake" the starterout anywhere. Do I have to remove a tie rod, or a stearing linkage to get it out? Or is there another way?

turn the steering all the way,i think to the left,and it will fit out,i did one a long time ago so i dont remember what direction to turn steering wheel.make sure battery is disconected,have starter tested after removeing,if it checks ok,try cleaning ground wire off battery where it connects to chasis,

The service manual says to turn the wheel all the way. I did mine a few months ago and I don't remember which way I turned the wheel but it fits out with out much trouble. If you want to test the starter any further try clipping a jumper cable to the engine and the negative side of the battery and if you have no further problems then the ground strap to the engine is not making good contact at one end.
