1982 240D Auto. 109,000 miles.


Alright so I will try to expain this the best I can. I was driving the car down the turnpike at like 65 mph. (I dont really like to run it much faster than that) The car was cruising along nicely than started to lose power and when I pulled off it stalled out. I managed to get it started about 20 minutes later but it wasnt running very good. I drove it for about another 5 miles and it started to lose power again and now I can get it started.
It turns over fine. I tried starting fluid and that didnt really seem to make a difference. I pulled the oil filter style fuel filter and turned the engine over and nothing really came out just a few drips. Although I when i pulled the banjo fitting for what i believe is the return line I got a little bit of spray out of it. (5 inches high).
It has a full tank of diesel in it and i relplaced the two fuel filters. Are the mechanical primary pumps fail prone? I have expierence in gas MB's but have to admit I dont much about these diesel cars. Any help would be appreciated. I have to move it off the side of the turnpike by tomorrow or it will be towed.

 

Can I replace the mechanical primary pump with a aftermarket electric pump?

 

Okay. Do you have a suggestion for clearing a clogged line?

 

If you have a portable air tank, disconnect the fuel line from the tank and blow it out with air. Once you remove the fuel line from the tank, you will know if it's the line or the strainer. How far is the car from home? Could you put fuel in a small gas can and temporarily mount it under the hood? Connect the supply and return lines, and get the car home, just bypass the fuel tank altogether.

Oh I'm not sure how i forgot to mention this but when i was pulling the tank (Don't ask. I thought it had a in-tank primary and I wanted to test it.) **there was a line coming out of the tank that was bone dry and just kind of came off in my hand. It was one of the two that come out of the tank next to each other.** Any ideas??
