Default Mercedes 87 300D...Diesel Fuel Leak!!!!

On the left side of the engine (from drivers seat), the fuel travels through this little clear in-line fuel filter thru a short black small hose that goes into this metal cylinderical gizmo bolted to the side of the block. It has about 4 other small black flexible hoses connected to it with small hose clamps. The white plastic part that the hose from the in-line fuel filter connects to is loose and leaking diesel. Looks like I need to replace this approx 2" long metal fuel dist. thing. Anybody know what it is, what its called, part number and or what it costs? Any special things I need to know to change it out?Can I bypass the"fuel thermostat", how much does it cost and where can I order it?...and if I only change theO-Ring will it work? Thanks much in advance

If it's the diesel thermostat then you can't bypass it or replace o-rings. They cost about $130 if you do it yourself. It's easy, but a pain in the butt because of all those hoses that will leak in the process. Post pics of exactly what it is.

Can you tell me if the 300D 87 has "fuel thermostat", becauseeverytime time I called and asked to buy " fuel thermostat" for the car it seems to me those who want to sell there products are ok, but other are telling me that 87 300D MBZ has none, so who I have to believe???

Spicy,

Get the Haynes Repair Manual for you car. I got one, took some searching but sourced one locally. In the index it should have a reference to the fuel thermostat. If not, contact adsit.com and order the Chassis and Engine Manual for your car. Unfortunately, those are 90.00 each, but you do get a 10 percent discount. I got my repro Owner's Manual from them, and it looks sharp.

I suspect, I have a small leak from the engine as well, and I would imagine on my 83 240D I could have the same issue. I checked the oil level, and its fine, and also the oil pressure gauge is at 3 at speed.

Yeah I suggest always posting a Question here before you ever take your mercedes to a shop. Good job on saving money on un-needed repairs!!

They get discount parts and it would take less than a half hour install. Nice to see they're reasonable! [&:]So it was a disconnected line. heh

The 87 300D definitely has a fuel thermostat and it most definitely can be repaired and not just replaced. If anyone thinks you can't just replace the o-ring to fix the leak they are crazy. They might not know that the thermostat inside is available, but it is. Repairing the thermostat valve will cost you half or less ($40) of what it costs to replace the whole thing ($130-180).
