Loudness

Hi, I hope you guys can help a gal out...I checked the forum for threads on "exhaust and/or muffler sound and read all I could find. My problem though is that the noise is not coming from the rear at all. When I drive, my car simply sounds LOUD. I had the exhaust system checked sometime last year and they replaced a little piece between the muffler and the mid section of the car. While it did help some, it did not get rid of all the noise. Is there any thing else I am unaware of that needs to be looked at? :confused:Your comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

flex pipe from the turbo I can think of, I took my muffler off and dropped it, it was full of soot, maybe it's your muffler, I'm no mechanic but I do my own work

I agree with NJM above. MY 83 300SD was very noisy. Turns out the flex pipe
under the air cleaner on the 5 cyl diesel was the culprit. Am not sure if your
190 4 cyl is similar or has the flex pipe. Open the hood start the engine and
look around under or near the air cleaner to see if you can detect any exhaust
smoke or smell and have someone rev up the engine quickly as if going up a hill, for two or three seconds and look for smoke, smell and noise.
good luck..

Another way to find an exhaust leak is to cause a restriction at the tail pipe, while the engine is at idle speed, then listen for the escaping gasses. The restriction would make the leak more audible. I have found rather small leaks in this manner, sometimes all that is required is the tightening of a bolt.

Hi, I really appreciate the input. I will be having her checked out as soon the weather clears up a bit so that we can look for "smoke" under the hood anywhere. Maybe I'm just picky, but I have this inkling that a car as nice as this should not only look decent, but at least sound decent. Know what I mean? I can't stand the idea of going down the road smoothly and yet my car sounds like it is growling continually. I'll let you all know what I find out. Thanks again.
