Default non turbo to turbo

hello, im new to the diesels and have a question. i am picking up a 82 300sd with the turbo 5 cyl. the guy told me the motor is shot. he said it lost all power and started smoking really bad. any ideas on what could be the problem? he also has a running 76 300d non turbo. i would rather not have to buy it too, but if i did would they interchange? as in put the 76 motor in the 82 and use the turbo? i would like to just be able to fix the turbo motor. thanks for any help

Default RE: non turbo to turbo

well, i was in the process of buying the car and thats all they told me. now i have it. i took the air filter system off. the turbo has some pretty good shaft play. i dont know much about turbos but it feels like a lot. so i possibly found the problem. so what would a turbo rebuild cost from a reputable shop? or what size is it and maybe i can find a new one?

ialso read somewhere that there is a line that clogs up with soot but kind find where i read it at. could someone tell me which one and where its at? anything else i can do while i have stuff apart?

thanks for all the help
