Grandsons old (new) 1983 240d
My grandson was recently gifted his Godmothers 1983 240d when he turned 17. She kept it in her garage for 7 years starting it occasionally. It has 130k and is in pretty good condition. The rear bumper could use some work but is not hanging off. (After reading about the 240d I have come to the conclusion that it is more of a rear ending thing than backing up) He finally got it registered and took it to a local shop. They have informed him that his calipers are frozen and need replacing along with new pads. Since "Grandpas know everything", he has come to me to help in the repairs. I, in turn, having no knowledge of diesels or Mercedes, called in some mechanic friends to assist. I suggested that since we were already ripping the wheel apart, why not replace the rotor, caliper and pads all at the same time and start with a brand new braking system. Is there an on line place to purchase the parts or should I be going directly to a Mercedes dealer? What maintenance should he expect to have to perform because it is a diesel? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can offer.
