Good Deal?

I have the chance to purchase a 1983 300SD for $1000.
According to the owner it runs and drives OK.
Hereare the problems:
The power windows don't work (electrical issue).
The sunroof won't shut all the way.
The outside of the car is in what I would call poor condition. Dents and dings along with a small amount of rust.
The AC quit working.
I ama mechanic by trade but know nothing about a Mercedes. I'm not scared of a few electrical issues, I just don't want to buy a basket case thats not worth fixing.
Thanks in advance,
Greg

RE: Good Deal?

Thanks, I'll see if I can beat the price down some.
Any other major problems I should be on the lookout for when I go to meet him?

Thanks
Greg

RE: Good Deal?

Overheating and poor starting! Check if that vehicle ever over heated by demanding any documents he has. Check if the glow plugs, relay, alternator, fan clutch, radiator....anything like that was replaced. Because if it was overheated you run the chance of experiencing a blown headgasket eventually. If there were problems starting the car you may experience early engine faliure caused by a bent rod or broken valve. Check for any type of engine ping, the level of coolant, engine oil level, tranny fluid level, vibration, drivetrain jerk, engine temperature sensor, and fuel leaks.

There is little more expensive than a cheap mercedes.
+1. If you plan on using the Benz as a beater car then don't worry about dead motors in the windows or sunroof. Just FYI, fixing that A/C will run you about $1200 and any motors at least $300 each.

How many miles are on it? And will it be your daily driver? I would highly suggest to let the car idle for at least 5 minutes to ensure won't overheat when idling. Take the car on the highway and drive it fast too. The engine temperatureguage should be in the center or a little lower. If it's near the red line, don't buy the car.

Thanks for the input.
It has 165,000 miles on it.
Yes, I am looking for a daily driver.
I'm going to look at it sometime this week. I'll let you guys know what I find.

RE: Good Deal?

OK guys, I got an up close look at it tonight. The car runs and sounds great. No rattles, no overheating. The only issue I'm concerned about is the tranny.
It takes a good 5 to 10 seconds to go into any gear. Once in gear everything seems fine. I didn't get to drive it much, I plan to go back with a friend and take it for a longer drive. I tried to check the fluid level but it was getting dark and it was hard to tell where it was. There appeared to be some on the dipstick but I'm not sure how much.
So, am I looking at a junk tranny or just one needing an adjustment? Is there anything I can check/test to get an idea?

Thanks,
Greg
