Fram oil filter too long for an 85 300D?
Fram oil filter CH2930 is the part number called out for the MB 85 300D. However, when I inserted it in the oil filter housing during an oil change, I could not replace the cover. It seems to be too tall by a smigin. I bought an STP oil filter and compared the two filters and sure enough the STP was slightly shorter. The STP fitted. I measured the Fram filter with my metric ruler and it measured approximately 194mm metal to metal. Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone using the Fram without issues?

Hi could you not check it against the old one you removed , rule of thumb Check every part against the old one.

Fram makes some of the worst oil filters on the market.
The bypass section is filled with cotton gin waste. The only acceptable filter on the market is the Baldwin P102 (also sold as the Hastings LF380). Unfortunately it can be difficult to locate as its not a commonly stocked item in places that sell Baldwin filters. http://baldwinfilters4less.com.tempd...2/Default.aspx BALDWIN FILTERS Oil Filter Element,By-Pass - Automotive Oil Filters - 4ZLU9|P102 - Grainger Industrial Supply http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hht-lf380 |

The Mann oil filter isn't much better. Mann makes good filters in general, the problem is the bypass section makes it uneconomical to manufacture with high quality materials.
For a while, Fram sold some "Made in Turkey" filters that used tightly wound string in the bypass section. Its been a long time since I have seen one on a shelf and even back in the day you had to open the box and check its Made In location. The Mann PF1055/1 oil filter came in yesterday. It is marked 'Made in Czech Republic' on both the box and filter. As I previously noted, I measure the Fram at 194mm metal to metal. I measure the Mann 189mm metal to metal. The Mann's topside gasket/grommet extends above the metal rim a bit (the Fram's topside gasket/grommet does not). But the additional height of the Mann filter should have no effect on fit as the cover of the oil filter housing is bowed up in the center top. So either the Fram filter is too tall or I'm not seating it correctly. My next oil change isn't due for awhile. I suspect the Fram is too tall. |
