E300D mileage
My 97 mileage seems crummy. It runs well but get between 23 and 29 mpg. Never more. I always use the A/C and drive easily a mix of city and highway. Please comment on what your 97 E300D does. It will help determine if mine needs attention...

Heres a plan to boost you MPGs by about 3-5mpgs, and all for under $30.
1)check your tires PSI with a 99 cent air tire pressure guage. If they are not what your manual sugests, then go to the gas station's air pump and get them there.
2) replace your air filter, dirty air filters rob fuel mileage
3)replace your fuel filter as well
4)if youre really optimistic, use diesel purge in your engine. Its pretty easy to do and can be found at most auto parts stores. Read up about it online
5) "drive 55" according to the DOE you get your best fuel mileage at 55-60 mph
good luck

RE: E300D mileage
our cars weigh as much as three hondas and they are as comfortable to sit in as our living room. they are ssssllllloooooooooowwwwww but i don't care as they will do 100 mph all day ,every day, day in and day out and not cry about it. toyota has 6 autos that get 30 or better highway miles per gallon. if they brag about that, we are doing well with 30 -32 hwy mpg in safer more reliable mercedes cars. just my less than humble opinion.
