Looking at a 1976 300d. It looks in amazing condition. Havent driven it yet. Had a single owner nearly the entire time. 75k miles (I know, very low).
Whats the biggest issues I need to look out for? I didnt see anyone complaining about this year, but Im sure theres something bad on them. |
Still much hand work in the building of that car.
Prone to rust so inspect the underside and rocker panel area for rust. Otherwise, check for any noises when driving the car. Make sure all the fluids are clean. Could be an excellent car!

1981 300d...
Just bought a 300d with 140k miles today. There is some rust around the wheel wells, but I live in the Midwest and roadsalt is everywhere for 1/4 of the year at least. Is this a sign of a bigger problem? According to the seller the car was owned by his elderly father (the registration that I checked out on the test drive confirmed this), and it has been sitting in the garage for the last few years. He also said he put $900 into a tune-up, and it had "newer" tires. It seemed to run fine on the test drive, although when braking it seemed a bit "heavy" (but I may just not be used to the car...however, I have experience driving a 2002 3/4 ton truck and even with the trailer full it seems to stop "lighter") but there were no obvious noises when I braked. Why is converting to veggie bad, and can I put bio-diesel in this car? I am not mechanically inclined (I get my oil changed at JiffyLube) and probably just made a huge mistake selling my 99 Toyota for this car but it is beautiful and I love it. I obviously have no idea what I am doing, but any advice anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. This car will be my daily driver, and I plan on relocating to CA within a year or so. I just want to take the best possible care of this car as I can, but I can't drop a thousand bucks on repairs. Also, I am willing to learn how to maintain this car myself, but beyond refilling fluids here and there I am as comfortable under the hood as I am doing neurosurgery. Sorry for the long-winded post, but I am equal parts excited and freaking out that I just blew what little savings I had on this car!

You list the 300 CD non-turbo as a good buy, what's wrong with the turbo version?

1982 300D Turbo model was a fantastic car.
We all know the engines and the trannies on these are strong, but what about the other components. Like the suspension and front end, electrical systems. This car drove like it was on rails from the day I bought it with unknown miles. I never needed an alignment and it wore tires evenly like it was its job. It was a bit noisy though. It had better pickup than my 1995 E300D. I just stayed on top of the fuel, air and oil filters. My 1995 E300D does none of these things. |
