Default Cruise control question?

Hi my issue with my cruise control is that it accelerates as long as I'm pressing the cruise control lever but but won't set/hold the speed after I release it. Is it electrical or vacuum that sets and holds the speed? Where might I begin looking to resolve the problem? I haven't tried the cruise control since fixing my central door lock vacuum leak yesterday. Would this have anything to do with why my cruise control was inoper. or are the two totally different systems and not related?

Hey so cost wise what am I looking at (ballpark is fine) for having mine rebuilt vs. buying new? Also what does the control amplifier look like? A silver box about 5X7" by chance? The reason I'm asking is I have a donor car a 83 240D that I could take it from and try it if it uses the same one.
