Default Change my intake? From CA to K&N?

So i just got my 300D and i was amazed as to how dirty the air filter was. it looked like a shopvac filter, but dirtier. Since this was a CA car, it has the special air filter that costs as much as a K&N ($50), but looks like crap. So i was thinking, is it possible to change this ugly round box and convert it over to a K&N cone filter? it seems like it would only require a different rubber hose to connect, and in adition i am not sure where the intake gets its air from. It all looks closed off, and definatelly not like there is a nice cold air supply available. i have 2 pictures, and would like to know if there are any bad things about going with a different filter, like will will i mess up the turbo or something. thanks...

if you look at the pics you can see that i have enough room to install something else.

Default RE: Change my intake? From CA to K&N?

Well i learned a lot from going to Summit Racing, they have some awesome people working there. There exists no K&N filter that will fit in my Cali air barrel, but i can go either make myself something or buy something aftermarket. So i was looking around and found this site on ebay...

It is a cone air filter that will fit mine perfectly, but at a price. i can get it with a K&N but that would cost me more. So do i get this style of air filter, or do i try and find some other cars air filter setup that has a box close to the size of this box. i then put it in the same place and try to hook up the same connections. i would only want to do this to get the cold air from the frame, or otherwise the cone would be sucking alot hotter air from the turbo and the engine. If i would get another cars box, i could buy a K&N for it cheaper, but it would be very hard to find the right size, and car that i can rip it out of.

Below is a picture of the ebay pic.

Please leave well enough alone.

The K&N Filters look nice but they allow too much dirt to go through. Their filtering ability is questionable.
