car wont start, blinking WTS light.

ive read up a lot of the subject, but i have a 1980 240d.

it seems i have the newer style pencil plugs, stock.

and i think i have the more expensive relay box thing.

i have not had a chance to test the system as far as voltage and continuity.

but what my question is...if i were to buy the bosch fast relay, can i use that with my older style relay box?
there seems to be a few different parts and such used.

i have this one, i think.

can i replace that whole assembly with this?

if so, what all is involved? do i need anything else?

i should add that i had the car plugged in for an hour or so, with no effect. first diesel, so i assume that just wasnt long enough?
ive got it plugged in, now. gonna let it go overnight.

ok, i was just outside doing some testing with the multimeter.

i did find out from a tutorial by dieselgiant that i was not getting power to a few of the glow plugs at the relay.
but then i discovered that i wasnt getting power to the relay at all.
should i be doing this test with the ignition turned to the glow plug?

thank you for that information, my testing seems to confirm that one or more glow plugs have failed.

it was indeed blinking after attempting to start.

i understand that i may have been duped, but when i went to look at the car before i brought it home, the guy i got it from had it plugged in and it started right up. now, with the system the same way it was a few days ago....i cannot seem to get it started.

sorry for so many questions. am noob.

i just did that this morning, following a tutorial.

i dont have power going to the relay.

should i be doing that with the ignition turned to glow plug?

i see that now. since im not getting power to it, what would that indicate?

x0mb3 01-08-2016 12:27 PM

well, since the wire is always hot, wouldnt it be safe to assume it comes from the battery/alt?

wouldnt there be some other force at work, that would prevent that wire from being hot?

im gonna check it again, in a sec. i might have been using the wrong setting on the multimeter.
