Black/Blue exhaust; start from cold

I have a E300 TD Avantgarde TD Auto; 1999

When starting from cold I get a great deal of black/blue exhaust fumes for about 1 to 2 mins, then all goes clear and engine also goes reasonably smooth, well smooth for this diesel.
Any body now what problem I have & would it be expensive to correct.

Thanks Super Moderator - any idea if this will be expensive to fix?
Does in mean take the cylinder head off etc?
