Default Any specific cause for a selenoid to quit quickly?

I might just be having bad luck - but I had a selenoid quit on a starter, replaced it with another starter (used, not rebuilt). The engine started beautifully for days - no excessive cranking at all. I took it on a long drive (3-4 hours) and then it wouldn't start at all. A light tap on the selenoid allwoed me to get it started, but that's the same problem twice in a matter of approximately 2 weeks. Could something be causing this to deteriorate, or is it simple bad luck? BTW - engine is from a 1980 300D.

Thanks!

Mike
