Aftermarket block heater
 

What suggestions do any of you have for an aftermarket block heater for a 1978 300CD? I have been able to crank successfully down to about 30 degrees F, but I know that she will struggle when it gets much colder. Still using the original "slow" glow plugs. Will upgrading make a difference in cranking?

Why go aftermarket? Pull the proper freeze plug and install an OEM water jacket heater.

Upgrade the glow system!
with proper "Glows" it should start at 0 Degrees F,if the compression is good.

What are you running for oil?
Mobil 1 5W40 "Truck and Suv" (Fully synthetic Diesel rated oil) will allow the engine to
spin over more rapidly (less strain on the starter) in COLD weather!

Im needing to get my 1984 300d winter ready, where and what size is the water jacket plug? Does the lower radiator hose type heater effective at getting the engine warm? Would I need to add a heater to my Transmission as well?

Just call your Benz dealer and order one. The hose ones don't work as well and waste more electric. So if you use it much the factory one is cheaper in the long run plus lasts longer
