RE: 96 e300d buy
I have the same year and model, and there are basically two weaknesses if you can call them that. One are the front spring perches, they have tendency to rust out. This is a known issue, and if properly repaired, can be overcome. The other issue is the replacement of glow plugs in this model. They have a tendency to get carbon bound, and in many cases, removal can be a difficult task. I purchased mine with 196,000 miles on it about 2 years ago, and it rides like a new car. Prior owner had major engine work done regarding the replacement of timing chain, fuel lines, brakes along with having the transmission serviced. Since I have had the car, I replaced all 6 glow plugs (a real pain), and two front shocks. Mileage around town 27 mpg, on the road 35-37mpg. It is not the fastest car off the line, but at highway speeds it is comfortable, safe, and handles like a charm. I wish you luck with your new vehicle.....

Electrics are fine, and everything works with the exception of the fuel gauge, and it is the gauge itself that is bad, not the sender. It is not that big an issue, and the cure is worse than the disease. I keep accurate written records at fill up time, and also have a Scangauge attached to the OBD port at all times. I know that some of the earlier models had harness issues where the insulation would break down, but from what I understand, that issue was corrected by the time the 96 year went into production.
