'87 Turbo
Hello all,
I've owned two mercedes previously, but now I am looking into an '87 turbo diesel. It's got about 150,00 miles on it and the asking price is $3,800. I'm wondering if any of you own this model (or similar) or have any imput on the car.
P.S: you can e-mail me at: mean@bee.net

RE: '87 Turbo
The 87 300D is a wonderful car and for the mileage you stated, $3,800 is not bad, but only if there is no rust, interior in good shape, maintained condition, 3000k oil changes, AC working, needing little to nothing.
More important is if the turbo killer, TRAP OXIDIZER has been removed (MB will remove free) and that the head is checked for no cracks (upon cold start, there should be no pressure within several minutes in the cooling system) Should be able to squeeze top radiator hose (pinched with fingers) together, as well as a look into the coolant reservoir to make sure there is no oil mixed in with the coolant. If this test passes, also make sure the cooling system is 100% temp guage should range between 80c and 100c under normal operation. Mine runs between 83c and 95c normally. Oil should peg 3 bar from above around 1200 rpm, and idle at around 1-1/2 bar.
This car should run from 0 to 60 in or around 12 seconds. Shifting of the auto tranny gears 1 thru 4, should occur at or around 2000 rpm and without flare (revving between shifts)
The ride should be crisp and precise as this is a very good handling and ride comfort car.
Listen for any unusual noises or bangs or thuds, or anything that doesn't sound right. These cars are tight usually with no buzzes, rattles, etc.
Service history should be included so you know what has been done for maintenance etc.
