81 300sd - no turnover

This morning, I tried to start the old beast. She turned over briefly and I accidentally didn't keep the key turned in the ignition so it would start completely. It turned over briefly as a result. I wait and then try again (after the glow plug light goes off) then nothing. Doesn't turn over at all. I waited for about 30 minutes and try again.. nothing.

I am trying to google for the location of the fuses and start there. Guess it might be one of the following:

- glow plugs
- starter
- fuse

Does anyone know what this could meen? I have other repairs beyond this and i've been trying to find a mechanic in the area (not a dealer). Could anyone recomend a mechanic that specializes in older diesels in the sf bay area?

Thanks for any help :)

i had this same problem. Do you hear a clicking noise when you try to crank? if you do but dont hear the starter your starter is bad. if you dont hear a clicking noise then the relay or silanoid is bad. I replaced my starter useing the shop manual. it was pretty useful and only a $100 repair through autozone

Ass-u-me, that is that assuming this engine is started daily and all of a sudden is acting up as you describe (could be, as far as I'm informed, an engine that hasn't run in some time) (makes a difference) a multitude of possible issues...........but lets start with a known up-beat battery (12+ volts) ...You should be able to crank until the cows come home, or the battery drops below 400 cranking amps, which will be useless............

If amps are up and no turn....look at the....starter motor!

Scenario #2........ Engine cranks, no start....look at glow plugs.........If one GP (glow plug) is dead (infinite Ohms) it becomes real hard to start, especially below 32F. You can test each GP............

If this engine hasn't run in since summer, consider fuel delivery an issue as well......algea?
