Default '77 300D fuel problem

This is kind of a two part question. I have a '77 MB 300D which is in pretty good mechanical condition. A few years ago it began acting funny after the fuel guage was below 1/4 tank. It almost acts like it is out of gas. About a year ago it started showing the same symptoms except it was at 1/2 tank. Last month it began showing the same symptoms at 3/4 tank. Any ideas to what it could be, and could a fairly mechanically inclined person fix the problem. My second question is if anyone could recommend a good maintenance manual. I found the Mercedes Benz official repair manual online. Any recommendations?

Sounds like the strainer and lines need cleaning. Also replace the fuel filters if you haven't done so recently. The best manual so far for the money is the factory CD you order from the MB Classic Center.

Cycleboy + if your rubber fuel lines are old change them also. the newer fuel can make them swell especially if any alternitive fuels have been used.
