Default 300sd too much black smoke

I set my timing at 25 degrees b t d c. Before that it was set at about 28/29 degrees. It was smoking just as much, and I do not seem to have the same pick up at 25 degrees. My question is is it o k to give more advance to the timing like 2 or 3 degrees or should i live it at 25 degrees?
