Default 1999 e300 stalled on freeway

Hi Im new to this forum, never owned a Mercedes or diesel before.I recently purchased a 1999 e300 turbodiesel with 69000 miles ran great for the last 3 months even took it on a 800 mile trip to Monterey, Ca with no issues.Well on sunday I was driving on the freeway with wife and kids going about 80mph A/C on when it suddenly dropped rpms, wouldnt accelerate and then stalled.(Kinda like it ran out of gas but I still have 1/4 tank) Do you think it may be the fuel pump or fuel pump relay??what should I check ? there is no diagram for the relays in the engine bay and there is no fuel pump fuses on this car Please help. Thanks in advance

I would round up the usual suspects before delving into deeper water. Replacing the fuel filters would be my first choice......if they are clogged, no fuel gets to the engine. If that does not solve the issue, you may have algae contamination in the tank. That in turn can clog any of the components between the tank and the filters. Good luck.....

There is also a screen at the bottom of your fuel tank that can get plugged up.

There is chemicals you can buy to kill the stuff in your tank but it also means that the dead bodies will plug of filters for a while afterwards.
Look for a chemical that has on the lable that it has an enzyme/s the break-up/eat-up the fungas. Regular autopart stores sell it.

Don't discount the fact that your tank sending unit/gauge my not be working correctly.
Items 26 and 29 are need to chang the pre-filter; if this filter is covered with gray green to black slimy stuff that is the fungas.

To change the spin-on fuel filter you will need items 14,11, and 8.

The fuel tank screen is item 20 and the seal for it is shown as 23. unless the tanks screen is ripped it can be cleaned and reused.

Here is an online service manual; it only goes up the 1995 but you engine is similar:

Thanks for the responses, now to change the fuel tank screen does the tank have to be empty? I will change the filters and clean the screen this weekend. To get these parts that I need should I get it from a Mercedes dealer or an auto parts store? And thanks again for the answers.I will post my progress after the work. Thanks, Anton

The Fuel Tank definately needs to be emptied.as the Screen is on the very bottom of the Tank.
Also you need to take a look under there before you start the job. On my older 1984 model you need a 46mm or 1-13/6 inch socket to get off the Tank Screen. On yours I do not know what you need to do the job; you may need a different or special socket.

Also If your little pre-filter is not scummed up and you can ever cut open the old spin-on filter to see if it is scummy you may not need to check the Tank Screen. But, that will be your call.

As for parts I am thinking that next to the Dealer the next likely local place would be NAPA. But I have never bought this sort of thing from them. The spin-on filtery you may be able to get at most large auto part stores the little Pre-filter; maybe not.
NAPA may or may not be able to match up the O-rings.

Apparently my older Mercedes and your Mercedes use the same Fuel Tank Screen. This means that if you cannot unscrew the Tank Screen by turning the Hose Fitting that is attached to it you will need a 46mm or 1-13/16 Socket to remove the Fuel Tank Screen.

I have been busy this weekend with work and birthday(mom & daughter) so I just checked my prefilter and fuel filter today ,the prefilter was very clean and the fuel filter looked new(dont know how to check it). When I crank it the fuel lines just bubble and it doesnt want to start at all, it just cranks. So do you think it could still be the filters? I ordered some new ones anyway and they will be here friday. Is there a way to pull codes without a scan tool?
I have an obdII scan tool but the connections are different. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Anton
