Default 1998 E300 Mileage

I recently purchased a 1998 E300 and I've been putting some money and TLC into the car to bring her up to purring again. I've done two tanks of fuel and frankly I was expecting much better mileage. My first tank of city driving was around 20 mpg and mostly highway was 26-28 mpg. Shouldn't I be getting better mileage? I'm paying attention to driving pretty mellow and not flooring it too much. I was expecting mid twenties in the city and low thirties on the highway. I love the car, just looking to be closer to 30 mpg.

96 e300d, non turbo, and in the winter I average about 26 around town, and 30-34 on the open road. Summertime will increase my mpg a little over those figures. You could take a look around the engine compartment, especially around the injection pump area to make sure you don't have a diesel fuel leak. Good luck with your car.

I have the 1995 E 300 D and was getting aprox 26 city and almost 37 hwy in the summer until this winter, Now Im down to about 26 Hwy havnt calc city yet.

I was thinking this is a fuel issue but have also had some starting issues due to cold. Car did not want to start when temp under 20 and got some bad fuel with water in it. Car also spit some fuel out of pump area when first started on a few occassions thinking it a return line leak

Anyone else have this problem ???

I have a 96E300 daily driver that gets 28 MPG(mix) city and freeway driving...gets around 32-34 MPG freeway driving.Had a similar problem long time ago that involved oneGF not working. It starts right away but kind of rough. A minute later she's idling fine. I had one of theGP changed and everything was fine from then on..

I have a 1999 E300 TD and what I have found was that the diesel fuel makes all the difference. I live in downstate NY and the fuel is not good at all. I average 25-26 mix driving or 450-460mls per tank. When I fill up in NJ that increases to 29+ or 500-600per tank b/c of the better fuel. Not only that, even the quality of diesel at your local gas stations can vary as much as 7-10% difference in mileage. For me Sunoco 45 centane gets the best results. Also on the highway cruising at 60 or 80 will make a huge difference.
