1987' 190D, Low Idle at Cold Start
HI,
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for the problems I'm having with my 87' 190d 2.5 non-turbo. It would be much appreciated.
- RPM's are low, 300, after startup when cold. Motor may stop if I don't give it some gas. I have to step on the gas pedal to raise the RPM's to 500 forabout 60 seconds, then it idles fine at 500-600 rpms. Is there a cold start mechanism somewhere?
- Cruise Control cuts off at random and will not re-engage for 20-30 mins.
- Auto transmission shift erratic. One day it shifts hard, 1-2. 2-3. Another day it slips and is slow to shift. Then another day it shifts perfectly. I'm thinking vacuum leak.

100% sure that the erratic shifting and low idle is simplycaused by poor vacuum.
Mine had the same exact symptoms yesterday. I replaced all the little rubber connectors that the vacuum lines connect into (the 3 way rubber connectorsand the 4 way rubber connectors) and the transmission shifted perfectly! I can't say how many your car used so just count them and make a list, but my 2.2L 190D used like 5 total and they were very cheap at autohausaz.com . You may want to also buy some extra vacuum line too because the lines are brittle from age and will break with force.
Assuming that the connectors have failed it would be a very inexpensive fix. Replacing those would be your best bet before moving onto the transmission modulator, which is more intense to replace.
The cruise control I have no idea, but it is a common problem on all 190's

Hello all,
Low idle issue resolved!!!
The electromagnetic actuator on the injection pump had a broken wire. Now the motor starts right up from a cold start and idles smooth. What a difference!
The transmission still has shifting issues. I haven't had time to look for a vacuum leak.
