1983 300SD - Engine Noise
Just picked this car up, rough idle with a "popping" noise. After running 10 minutes or so and warming, it seems to clear up. Plenty of power when warm. Seems like more black smoke than usual. Any suggestions appreciated!

If you are in the US and do not have a Volt/Ohm Meter (electrical multimeter) you can get one for $5 or less at Harbor Freight Stores.
Go to the Diesel Giant web site and he has a good pictorial on how to check the Glow Plugs using the Volt/Ohm Meter.
This is not a recommend to by parts from him as I believe he is way overpriced.
Do a Valve Adjustment.
For the Smoke Issues Check the Compression (Harbor Freight has a kit for that at $30 or less when on sale) and/or have your Injectors tested or rebuilt.
If you are only getting too much black smoke on acceleration after the above stuff is check you could adjust your ALDA to reduce the smoke. However, this might also reduce the Power. The ALDA allows the Fuel Injection Pump to give more Fuel when it gets manifold/boost pressure from the Turbo Charger. Some people like to turn them up or even remove them to gain more power; sometimes at the expense of a lot of smoke.
This is an issue related to compression that may work if you fell you have sticking Piston Rings.
