Exclamation `85 300TD auto wagon; 1st gear winds out before shifting to 2nd...2nd to 3rd normal

Hi everybody,
I have an automatic `85 300TD wagon with 200K miles on it. The engine is strong and idles properly. When I accelerate normally from a standstill, the transmission stays in first gear longer than it should, shifting as if I had the pedal to the floor. It might be between 3500 - 3750 RPMs when it lets go to second gear, and with a normal sounding thud and slight jerk (not a clunk). You better not be sipping your coffee! There are no whining, grinding, or clattering sounds from the tranny. When I try to accelerate very slowly it still does it, though the RPM may not be quite as high when it lets go to second. The shift from second to third is normal and so it usually shifts right after of first to second, since first winds up, staying in second for only a few seconds. Other than that the drivetrain seems pretty tight and solid. I have tried manually shifting with the selector from first to second but it still does it about the same.
-will appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Default Me Too!

I hope someone can shed some light on this. I have an 84 300TD Wagon and it is doing the EXACT same thing yours is. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll get it up on a rack and check the pressure in the tranny, then adjust the modulator as needed. I hope that's all that's wrong with it!

My kickdown switch seems to work fine. I don't have all the tools to properly diagnose the pressures in the tranny (ie. I can't find the right fitting or the test port), so I want to adjust the modulator a bit at a time and see if it helps/hurts the problem. Any advice as to which direction and how much to turn the "T" handle?

Well, with the bowden cable disconnected, it does indeed shift to 4th by about 20mph, but it never hits second. With the shifter in L it never shifts up and when in third and I move the shifter down to L it skips to 1st. So even with the cable disconnected, the problem exists... bummer Any other hints?
