I have searched this topic with no specific help. My friend has an 05 C230 that he wants to add a subwoofer too. I will do the install for him, butthe only thing I need help on is where to splice in a RCA converter to his factory speaker wires. His factorysystem is just 6 speakers, no sub, and no external amp that I can find.

Has anyone added a sub and kept the stock head unit? If so how did you do it?

Most likely you'll have to just splice in to the rear speaker wires for the RCA adapter. That's what the shops usually do.

 

I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my 2000' 230. rather than replace the rear shelf speakers i'd like to use a sub. do i need an amp to get decent results. i don't want to break any windows just get more bottom in the setup. i have replaced front speakers in door pannels but it seems like most of the bass comes from the rear. is the MB radio head set up to do this? I am replacing stock head with alpine A10 with built in cd player. I believe it has 25 watts x4.

You'll definitely need a dedicated sub amp. My recommendation would be to go with a 5 channel amp like the JL Audio 500/5. It has a dedicated class D sub amp and a four channel full range amp all in one tidy package. It will improve your sound quality throughout the frequency range.

 

Does this amp getpowerat the head in the dash or do i run a lead to the battery?? where would i mount it? i know bose systems(which mine is not)mounts it's amp in the sidewall of the trunk. I've done small ones years ago in firebirds and they fit in glovebox and powered right to the radio.and i spliced speaker wiresfrom theradio ,to the amp to the speakers. thanks for any help. I'm pretty good at following schematics and reading plans. This system really needs some bottom. thanks, joed

 

You'll have to run a power wire to the battery and dedicated ground. Depending on the sub configuration you want to use you could just bolt the amp to your sub box to keep it simple. You may also want to look at picking up a JL Audio CleanSweep to interface the amp with the factory head unit, that piece will also give you an AUX input for iPod or MP3 connection.

 

Yes this is what I expect, but I was wondering if anyone here has done this already and exactly what wires and parts they used.

there are a few products out there that you can use like a JC-6, or JC-8 but if you want good sound quality check into the JL audio CleanSweep.
