[>:] My mechanic told me that my 99 SLK 230 needs 1 of the 2 catalytic converters. He noted that MB asked for more than $2000 for both of the converters. I suggested that aftermarket merely cost 50% of what the MB is asking. My mechanic stated that it may yield a check engine light, possible for installing an aftermarket converter. Any one has this experience? what about if I decided not to spend the money, louder noise?

[&:]thanks guys for the prompt, encouraging, and assuring responds. I feel better in approaching this problem tomorrow.
by the way, my mechanic told me this afternoon that he felt more confident to suggest an aftermarket CAT for me after talking to another shop. I will look at the web to see where to get what you two recommended. thanks a ton.
