I got 2001 E320 4matic and just had the state safety inspection yesterday. It did not pass inspection due to the front left cv boot. Since I need to remove the axle to get to the boot. My question to all. What is the best solution? 1 replace the boot , 2 replace the complete axle assembly.
I have removed the rear axle of my older MB but not on the front of the E320. Can some one give me some hint on how to remove the axle on the front right.
Thank you

your better off having them do it for about 3 hours labor. you can get the boot seperate but you need to remove the outter CV joint to replace the boots. not very hard but a pain without a lift and proper tools.

Thanks for the advice, I had replaced the axle on the rear on my old 300SD. I am assuming the procedures would not be different as the rear. I read a tread on the axle and he said he took all the front tie rod and ball joint. Do I need o remove all this parts before I can get to the axle.
On the rear of my older MB, I did not remove any of the ball joint nor any other parts.
Anybody got a copy of the procedures to work on the CV boot.
you need to pop out the upper control arm balljoint. but you usually can leave the bottom ball joint attached. pop off the tierod and upper ball joint from the knuckle then slide the axle out . sometimes getting the axle out from under the strut is a pain. which means you might have to loosen the lower control arm so it swings down and out of the way.

need help again guys....got the vx home yesterday and heard some intermitent clickin of the front axle. took it to my mechanic today and he said it needs a front axle boots and cv joints but he was unable to find parts... anyone know where i can find these parts?thanks in advance for your help
Usually when a boot is torn or loose you have no idea how long it has been that way, gathering small particles and road debris in the cv joint bearings, so it is always recommended to replace the whole joint than to just clamp the boot back down. Also, it is rare nowadays to replace just the bearings in a cv joint axle. Usually you just buy a whole new axle shaft from the parts store, and that's often all they carry anyways.
