Default 123 230E ignition timing

Hi,
My engine blew up and I had a replacement fitted by a specialist reconditioning company. Unfortunately they were not old mercedes familiar so I am left with terrible idle running.
Does anyone know how to set up the dual vacuum dustributor on the 102 engine and how the ignition is timed. It would be nice to know the advance setting;
1 with no hoses attached at idle.
2 With the retard hose attached (under 60degC) at idle.
3 Withe both hoses attached, engine warm and at idle.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated. I live in a remote part of Australia so there are no nearby experts to quiz.

you should at least include the next 3 digits in engine number similar to what Heckflossen have done. this will greatly help eliminate any errors.

anyway, i will assume that you got the 102.982 engine....was that right?

at idle speed of 700 - 800 rpm:
with vacuum the crank angle BTDC is 8 to 12 degrees.

at 3200 rpm:
with vacuum (S and N position) is 39 to 43 degrees crank angle BTDC.
without vacuum (S position) 25 to 29 degrees crank angle BTDC.
( N position) 19 to 23 degrees crank angle BTDC.

you must test the timing at 3200 rpm as a rule.

starting speed dwell angle is 9 - 49 degrees or 10 - 50 percent.
ignition crank angle is -2 to 20 degrees.

Thanks sleepwalker,
it's a 102980 engine. One last thing do you know how the vacuum lines to the dual vacuum distributor are connected. The vacuum lines and plastic check valves and restrictors were destroyed when the block was ruptured.

Thanks again for the invaluable info.

yes, it was 102.980 engine alright. unfortunately, 123 model is not in my Workshop Information System anymore, so i cannot give you the right specs on engine timing.

as for the vacuums, it is still available in my Electronic Parts Catalog, so here it goes:

from retard side of vacuum box goes to time-lag valve (part number: 000 140 44 60).

from time-lag valve to electric change over valve.

electric change over valve to throttle housing.

another one:

from vacuum box to Y

one Y goes to intake manifold.

another Y goes to thermo valve of 50 degrees centigrade (000 140 72 60) then it will go to the regeneration valve (001 140 79 60).
