WTF, paint is coming off the console, that's crazy, it's a Mercedes, how can that be?
Yes, it happens to all SLK's at one time or another. I'm going to take ours apart this week and use a mild paint remover to take all the paint off and see if it looks good in plain shiny black. If it doesn't I'll get some interior dye from an auto paint supply store in spray cans and have at it. I tried the paint that Bazzle recommends but it's futile because at the point the paint decides to leave the console, it's just a matter of time when another section will fail. So unless you like dabbing on paint weekly and having that faux sponged on look that was so popular on home interiors 10 years ago, it's best to tackle the job in it's entirety and use a dye that's more durable and spray it on. The alternative is to cover it. Some have use CF and some leather but that's expensive. And if money is no object, some have bought new MB parts.
BTW, how much did the shop want to repaint the console? I would gladly pay someone to do it if it was under $300.

How hard is it to take the console pieces off because that is what I will need to do? Will a mild paint remover hurt the shiny plastic console underneath, b/c from what I see it looks pretty good?
Is it that difficult to pull off the glove box panels also?

You can go on my website (www.buellwinkle.com), Resources, SLK Tech Manual, Dissassembly, Dashboard and Center console. Did it today with help from a forum member and it took about 2 hours. Even using a mild water based stripped, the results were not suitable as it leaves streaks and such that are not appealing. In addition, even if you got it stripped perfectly, it's shiny and it's jet black, doesn't match the surrounding charcoal black or luster, looks cheap. Lastly, there's vinyl like the knee bolsters and armrest that you can't strip as they are not painted. I finished the stripping today, hopefully get it painted and put back together by weeks end and then I can post pics. It was oyster beigebut because my kid is not the neatest, I'm changing it to charcoal that will not show dirt. the seats and door panels will remain oyster.

I had the same trouble. Mine was so bad I was able to remove most of the paint with a scubby sponge and somemild remover (don't get it on your carbon stuff). Got some interior paint from the local auto parts and painted it black, looks great and isn't going to peel anymore.
So like the rolling stones said "Paint It Black"
