Hi all,

I have a 1998 SLK230 which has developed an intermittent screen wiper fault. Just recently it has become very slow & laboured and yet will work fine in a day or two.

I've had a look under the hood, and I cannot obviously locate the wiper motor, before I start investigating further and stripping down, does anybody know where it is and which areas I need to dismantle?

 

Remove the wiper blades, under the long black plastic cover is where the motor is, you will also find you alarm there as well. I'n not sure how many screws hold it down.

 

Hi, I had a similar problem, both blades going very slow. It turned out it was the linkage rather than the wiper motor. Well pleased as the motor costs an arm & a leg! Good luck.

 

I've narrowed it down to the linkage as well.

It threw it down with rain on Friday and the wipers worked normal speed, but slow again today.

The linkage is either worn or covered in crud (from parking under a tree) or probably both.

I've got a local garage to look at it today, I haven't got the time myself.

 

Glad to hear its a simple fix.

 

A simple fix, but not exactly cheap.

There are 3 separate parts to the linkage, in my case all 3 had partially seized bearings. The whole assembly cost £130 from MB.

Then 2 hours to remove, assemble the linkage and fit.

I'm glad I didn't pay MB labour charge, but it's still quite an expense, mind you I am tight.
