Question Need help on SL600 V-12

Aloha!

I've recently picked up a 1995 SL600 V12 project car and need some clarification re LH Engine Control Unit (ECU). I hope you all can help me. I've been advised by 2 mechanics that have limited experience with the V12 engine and they have diagonosed the problem to be the ECU.

The symptoms I am experiencing is that I can start the engine but it requires me to depress the gas pedal to keep it running. It feels like it's not getting enough fuel to the left bank. While it is running in this state, the engine runs very rough and not drivable. The 2 fuel pumps and filter have been replaced with new ones. The wiring harness does not reveal any cracked or shorted wires.

My understanding is this engine has 2 indentical(?) ECUs. One for the right bank and another for the left bank. They both have the same part # 015 54559 32 (LH SFI).

Question 1. When looking in the box that houses the electronic modules, these 2 ECU's are closest to the front of the car - one behind the other. But which one is for the right bank and which one is for the left bank?

Question 2. If I purchased a replacement ECU, can I just plug and play it or do I have to have it reprogrammed/reset/flashed? If it has to be reprogrammed does it have to be at the dealer or can someone recommend a place to send it to. The car cannot be driven in the state it is.

Question 3. What's a resonable price to pay for a used ECU and is there an easy way to tell if the replacement ECU is OK - short of installing it and hoping that it would idle smoothly and run the way it's supposed to? Any recommedation re suppliers? The dealer here is quoting $1751.00+ or one ECU not including labor to install it.!

Any other insight to the above discribed problems/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

no you cant buy a used ECU. wont work. take it to a good dealership. taking a guess is a costly mistake. dealership will know you car better and have the equipment to look at your engine. also there are alot more experienced people to help with the repair. spend some money at the delaership first and see what they tell you.. then make your decision.

The configuration of the chips is also year sensitive so you can;t use someone elses. I bought performance chips for mine and have the installation instructions, as my MB dealer wanted $6000 to replace the chips, it took me about half an hour, and you'll need torqz driver bits to open the box. let me know and I'll see if I can fax or email the sheets. Have they checked the airmass sensor for that bank?

I ordered a chip from Gforce Performance Chips a couple years ago for my 94 SL 600. I received it, read instructions to learn it states to connect it to the MAF sensor wires. Being the V12 has 2 MAF sensors, I wondered if I received the correct one or correct info?
So I contacted them mentioning above, V12 has 2. They said it doesn't matter, and assured me I had the correct one.
It didn't make sense to me that 1 side of the engine would have the chip, so I lost confidence in my purchase and left it on the shelf without using it. Just wondering if anyone else had any experience with their chips??

Would like to know if good or not? Nice to order something that works, and if so, maybe Id order for a different car.
thanks

Default SL600 running issues

Before spending a lot of money on ECU or chips I would check your timing chain configuration. If you read in your maintenance repair manual it tells you that if you fail to follow dirrection that the timing will be off but the car will still run but not good. I would pull the timing cover and inspect the position of the crank and both camshaft gears before spending unnessacary money.

Question 1999 MB SL 600 Sport

I'm about to acquire a MB SL 600 Sport with 21,000 miles on it. I would like to know if there is anyway to bypass the 155 mph speed limiter and what safe mods can be applied to increase the 0-60 times. I don't want to spend Renntech money but would like to outperform my dad's 2004 RX-8. lol

Default 1999 MB SL 600 Sport

It is a tuned RX-8 with 0-60 in the 5s and a top end the same as mine, the little thing kills me in the curves but if I can lower my 0-60 time and get a higher top end, I can get the better parking spot in the garage with the automatic door. Plus, I wouldn't have to hear about his SECA experience. lol
