Default Copy of Key for 1988 560sl

When I bought this car in 1996 I was told to never loose the key - there is only one and it would be impossible to get a copy made - does anyone know if this is true? I've only taken my car to two certified Mercedes service mechanics in the 10 years I've had it and neither has ever had to purchase keys for cars and didn't know. Is there a Mercedes contact number for this kind of thing?
Thanks!
Carol

Go to dealer, bring copy of driver's license and proof of ownership - they can order you several new master keys. About $40 each....

There are really three keys available, the one you know with the square rubber head, one without the head called a wallet key, and one with a round head, that will fit only the ignition and door. They should be less than $30 and some larger dealers can cut them from your key, or they can order them! Its no big deal if you show proof of ownership.

I had an 88 300E and needed the original key. I called Don Rasmussen in Portland, gave them my VIN's and they ordered a new key for $28. They refused to mail it to me, tho. I had to drive there in person with the title and drivers license to prove the car was mine.

Start calling dealers and when you find one that quotes you a reasonable price you should pay them a visit. You will need to prove that you own the car and this can be done via registration, title etc.
