Default 96-98 SL500 purchase

I'm looking to buy a 96-98 SL500, this is my 1st MB purchase. How much more is it worth paying for a car with a PANO top?

What are my biggest worries for a car with 100-120K on it?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

run carfax. check prices, option costs and specs at cars.com. service records are really important. the more that has been replaced up to the 100,000 mile mark the better. mechanically, if maintained properly, the engine and transmission can easily last 400,000 miles. of course things like seals, vacuum hoses, water hoses, belts, pumps, strut bump stops, struts, shocks, motor mounts, timing chain and guides, etc, will need to be repaced in time. I've put in enough money into my 90 to buy a new sl. I've been replacing parts before they go bad and keeping the old parts as spares. To me it's worth it, cause I plan on keeping it for the rest of my life and at this point it is almost like a new car. the 129 is a very special car, like art work to me.

Default Sl500 1998 Convertible

I have just been bitten by the MB bug after seeing the 1998 SL500 convertible a friend bought. So I may chime in on this thread from time to time with some very basic questions.

My first question is if I buy from a private party what are the questions I should ask if interested in his/her car?

I have owned my 96SL500 for 5 years. The first 2 years I put the hardtop on in the late summer for about 3 weeks. I haven't had it on since. I drive most everyday and put the top down when the temperature is below 86 and it isn't raining. I never put the top down wet. Personally, I don't think you will use the top that much or won't to jockey with it. I find to do it right, you always need 2 people even when on a hoist. There is a great write up on the 97. I will send to you from another email. Advantages 5 speed auto, variable valve timing, quicker than *****, well you know. Make sure the top works well and take it to a good independent and have them of over it. The locking system must work perfectly, expensive to repair.
