Default Fuel gauge malfunction

I have a 1996 S420. While driving my fuel gauge amber light starts blinking, indicating that I am almost empty. However, there is 1/4 to 1/2 tank full when it happens.

Also, while sitting at traffic light, suddenly the fuel gauge goes down to empty instantly. When I take off, the gauge slowly rise to proper level.

I am confused. What is the problem, please help? Please be specific

the fuel level sensor must be worn out and malfunctioning.

pull it out and check the variable resistor or contacts.
