Default Grinding noise and backfiring?

Hi Everyone,

So, recently I purchased a 1972 Mercedes SE280 and just today it started making a strange noise.

It has had an oil change recently and replaced the battery, the front shocks are new.

The noise is a LOUD grinding noise it sounds like its coming from under the hood. It started when I was going only about 40MPH on the freeway and when i slowed down to pull over the noise came to a stop. I continued on driving. Then last week while on the freeway the exhaust made a loud pop noise kind of like a backfire noise.

Do you have any idea as to what could be causing these problems?

Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Gab

Hi Gab,

Grinding sounds stops when you stop over, please bring over to ure garage/workshop have a check on the wheel bearing/hub/ anything moving along the wheels.

i have suspect it could be the wheel bearing/hub bearings on your tires... due to never replaced before. A case of wear an tear of an ageing car.

havent you check the list of what i mention to you before?

let us know whats the story if u found out

But how would wheel or hub bearings account for a backfiring noise? Sounds like an engine/spark/timing and/or maybe to include water pump. One thing is for sure...a visit to shop would definitely be a good first stop.

Agreed on 97dmsrS420 said.

there are a lot of things that u need to look on to... backfire meaning the spark plugs/cable plugs, Distributor cap/Distributor Fin.

the grinding sounds, it could be also the bearing wearing off.. was it loud from front or rear? it stops when you pull aside on the road right? Again i assure you do check the bearing/ bearing hubs. as it follows when the wheels rotate.

If it comes from the engine it could be the water pump, fan belt tension-er, belt drives. Go visit ure workshop / garage for another inspection. When u need to take care an old skool ride... u re going to have to replace many things in 1 flow or problems comes a little bit by bit. It does irritates you but happy for the mechanics because its money flowing in to them.
