Default programming master key

Hi, everyone. I owned VW, then Audi, then Bimmer, now it's MB time!
Nice to find a forum where we can help each other.
Here comes first question: I've got new master key which have to be programmed by dealer. Can I do it myself ? How complicated is it !?
(1999 ML 320)
Thanks.

Default RE: programming master key

you cannot do it by yourself because you have 4 key lines and 8 key tracks for all the keys. that means you can use 32 keys for every mercedes-benz car! (EIS only).

the only programming you can do with your key is for global (all door locks) and individual locking.
by pressing the lock and unlock button together till the led (light emitting diode) on the key flashes, it changes the locking function.

how complicated? even an expert feels nervous in doing the programming using the star diagnosis.
once the key track is used, it cannot be used again exept for the keyless go key.
once a mistake has been made of dis-abling the key, it will be useless. there is no such thing as revocable key now. all is irrevocable. i saw many mechanic's face turned white making such mistake and the customer's red face. a green key is needed to re-program the new key. if a key is lost, i can disable it and cannot use to start the car.

so complicated to explain. too many parameters involve that it takes the german 3 days to train us on it alone.
