Default Newbie + Step Motor problems

Hello everyone my name is Nico. Im an Audi guy (audizine.com/audiforums.com) and have done a lot of work to my A4.
My mom drives a 2001 ML320 and its starting to fall apart. The Ac stopped working (well, the flaps to be more specific since it does every now and then decide to blow ice cold.) When you switch the control to cold it blows extremely hot air... Mercedes quoted $1238+ tax to fix the Step motors (couldnt find out from them which ones are bad either. How many are there??). I did a quick search on here and found some things about even if you do swap them out yourself you have to get them adjusted at Mercedes bla bla bla. Basically I am wondering if I can do this job myself?
If it is just removing all the components to get to the Step motors and swap them out then I can do it (done full interior swap on my A4 incl dash). But if I do have to go back to mercedes for other junk and pay another $500 for adjustment etc than I rather just off the bat have them do it.

Can anybody give me some tips as to where to buy Step motors (besides dealer), how to figure out which ones are bad (either now or once its all apart)... Thanks in advance everyone!
