I have the exact same problem with my c270 cdi,

started by dropping into free reving while changing thengetting stuck in gear till on/off,
nowit displays D but is always in 2nd even if i disconnect battery, the tip and w/s button dont work either.
no mulfunctions shown on dash.

has anyone resolved this??

is it really the speed sensor?

Had the conducter plate changed, but still has same fault.
goes free reving when changing the last gears, then to limp home mode.

Is the speed sensor part of the conductor plate??

I have been told that a new gearbox is the next option

Hi, you need to get any fault codes read from the transmission ECU. You will probably find code/s relating to voltage supply problems to the controller. If this is the case, you need to check the condition of the battery. Even though the vehicle may start, charge and run ok, the sligtest drop in voltage will confuse the transmission ECU and put it into limp. ( That's why the fault goes away once you have run the engine for a while and then restart it. The alternator has given the battery a short boost bringing it up to the correct voltage ) We have seen this problem many times and either topping up or replacing the battery has fixed it.

I believe that the later model BMW X's have a flaring problem and that this has been cured in many cases by the use of a special additive to the fluid. I've been told that the price is about $180 for the 1 litre needed. Has anyone heard about this?

presently got one in the shop doing as we speak let me give you a run down my friend brought it by for me to have a look at he had already took it to a mercedes specialist who ran his diagnostic and told him it was the speed sensors on the electro static connector plate he had it changed brand new with filter and oil and a fat bill at the end but same problem afterwards the tranny was stripped apart no problems with clutches ect all still brand new resealed the box and replaced a suspected faulty torque converter still same problem the gearbox ecu was sent away to be tested it came bk as being ok we are presently awaiting a esm module "gear stick" to fit on it because i've seen when drinks have been spilt on it it gives the same problem...dunno if any one of you will want to be the guinea pigs and test cause im having problems locating a working used one and mercedes needs nearly 400 quid for it brand new.also i think the esm needs to be adapted as well with diagnostic equipment
